When you grow up in the van Riemsdijk family, the love of the moving business is in your genes. "Our grandfather founded the company in the 1920s," Carla explains. "The business was further made great by our father Karel. He started with a horse and carriage, from a drawer in the Kinkerbuurt, where there was a gas heater against the cold. He often worked day and night, and sometimes we didn't see him for weeks. The move of his office to Amsterdam Zuidoost was the crowning glory of his work.

The archetypal Amsterdam company serves customers across the country and even beyond. Elly lists a few names: "The OBA, TomTom, Defence, KPMG, the Anne Frank House. We deliver custom work for every customer. At the Conservatory we wrap the often valuable instruments in silk gloves and at Amsterdam UMC we wear sterile suits when we are working in the operating rooms. We also increasingly provide additional services such as the Handyman service, storage and a total facility management offer."

Private individuals can count on just as much care. Tom says: "When I enter a house, I can see at a glance how we should approach it. That is a matter of years of experience; at the age of 14 I was already following in my father Charles' footsteps. It's more than just moving, people want to be taken care of. Moving is high on the list of stress factors but we turn it into a moving experience. When I see people smiling afterwards because it all went so well, it makes my day."
